Space Planning

In cities where the real Estate prices are high and space is an expensive commodity, most people are forced to make use of every square inch of available space. The confines of designing small spaces compounded with shoestring budgets often make a jigsaw puzzle look easy. It is the problem, which demands creating the right equilibrium between open space verses functionality. In space planning, the important goal is to visualize how a space will function when finished out and furnished, and communicate the design of an interior environment that will meet the needs of the end user. Of primary concern are the functional and aesthetic aspects of the individual rooms and how the rooms relate to one another. Good coordination of these two elements creates effective space planning.

Good Practical solutions with creative ideas provide residents with a comfortable lifestyle within the restricted environment. A Home should be such that the settings that surround you should speak for themselves. Optimum use of space, a functional layout, keeping structural safety in mind, attention to details, effective use of color and illumination with quality workmanship are the Mantras for a successful space planning.

Though there are constraints at all the sites, budget and completion time being the key factors, the challenge for an Interior Designer lies in being true to one’s own sensibilities and satisfying the clients by creating a smooth functioning home, where the clients feel happy and confident.

One of the first steps while space planning is to sketch a furnishings layout on the floor plan, based on what a typical room requires. This sketch will help define where the traffic flow will be in the space and if, once the furnishings are in the home, the traffic pattern will be convenient for the end user.

It will also show if furnishings will fit in the room and point out any asymmetry (or symmetry for that matter) where it isn’t supposed to be. Media walls that are off center of a furnishings grouping, bed walls that aren’t big enough and rooms that are too small or too large for their intended function are seen and can be corrected.

Floor outlets can be determined, door swings corrected and ceiling details defined. While carrying out all these activities it is very important that the structural strength of the building be maintained for safety consideration. It also allows the designer to see room relationships and if, according to the information received from the client, they will be functional for the client’s lifestyle.

Home reflects a blend of styles. Space constraints have made a search for innovative new materials and elements for interiors. While space planning ceilings and flooring play a very important role and so should be treated neutrally. Light and color plays an integral part while space planning Color is an important tool of spatial manipulation to overcome the limitations of the given shell of the interiors.

Dark colors in the ceiling however make the room seem claustrophobic. Light colors to the ceiling will create the illusion of added light. Light colored ceilings also have the added benefit of reflecting more light into the room. Same is rule is applicable for the flooring too... with many innovative materials like vitrified tiles etc can be used for floors.

The other important factor that governs the designing is light. Subtle interplay of ambient lighting enhances the volume of the space making it seem larger than it is. Accent lighting can also be used for opening up the dark corners which eat up space, thus making space seem brighter and larger.

Minimalistic furniture, straight and clean lines looks light and gives an uncluttered look to small spaces. More over with dirt and grime seeming to make their way into every nook and cranny of the house, minimalistic furniture has the advantage of being easy to keep clean.

Hence these various elements and techniques of manipulating space can make the area look more spacious and larger than its area would indicate. After all what people require ,especially in cities where space is a luxury, are designs that are devoid of frills and fancies and serve the function that they were built for . It also fosters a united vision resulting in a better interior space with functionality and creates a beautiful home to live in…….
